Baotou Group, the largest steel enterprise based in the northwestern region of China, has expanded its e-commerce operations with its first e-commerce platform launched last year to boost sales, according to a Nov 16 Baotou Daily report.

Shortly after the launch of the new platform, a customer from Tianjin purchased more than 470 tons of hot-rolled coil stocks on Oct 24. The order was made and paid for online, and delivered the same day, marking the first order made on the platform.

Zhang Peng, general manager of the Electronic Commerce Branch of Baogang Group, explained the reasons for setting up the new e-commerce platform.

According to Zhang, with the rapid development of the economy and overcapacity in the steel industry, the traditional high-volume, low-frequency, and standardized production and sales model is increasingly unsuited for modern customers. The continuous development of the e-commerce industry will bring the sales of steel products into a model which features platformization, customization and intelligence.

Already, the number of registered users on the company’s platform has hit 1,150, covering more than 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions across the country. The e-commerce platform currently sells plate products in Tianjin, East China, Chengdu and Guangzhou. Customers can collect the goods on the day of purchase.
